A 20-year-old Ruawai man has died after his motorcycle collided with a van.

Police say Aaron Nigel Rudkin was travelling south on Jellicoe Rd, Ruawai, on January 8 and it appears he attempted to overtake a van that was turning right into a service station.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance staff.

Senior Sergeant Robert Nordstrom says the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet or protective clothing, had no motorcycle licence and was driving an unregistered and unwarranted motorcycle.

Police say speed may also have been a factor.

This is Kaipara's first road death for 2013 and Mr Nordstrom says it is very disappointing.

"People have just got to be smart about their choices, don't get yourself in situations where you can kill yourself or other motorists."
