The SPCA's photos of this dumped dog were too awful to publish.

The dog was discovered on Sunday on Waikare Rd in the Karetu area. She was found near a pile of rubbish behind a roadside bank, still alive and walking around disorientated. When she was examined by a vet it was found the deep gash on her head was most likely made by an axe or similar heavy blade.

Broken pieces of skull were in the wound and her eye had filled with blood.

The Bay of Islands SPCA would like to speak to anybody who has information about the dog or the attack. The dog had to be euthanased.

She was a light brown medium sized dog with pink scar tissue on her lower legs. She was wearing a worn black webbing collar.
