It was a great start to the Whangarei Deep Sea Anglers Club's 2009/2010 fishing calendar.

The opening tournament on October 31 and November 1 at Tutukaka attracted a big turnout with a Fyran boat and Yamaha outboard going off to one of the many anglers by way of a lucky draw.

On both days Tutukaka Coast Lions once again filleted snapper and kingfish for hospice and Coastal Care.

Owen Guan's 16.74kg kingfish, landed on local charter boat Harpoon, won the kingfish section and a load of prizes including a rod and reel.

Second place went to Rick Sayer on Say-R, closely followed by Shiloh Rumbal on Lucky. Fourth place went to local Peter Tuhaka rounding out a great day for the Say-R team.

Kelton Ryan's 9.04kg snapper, landed on Divider, won the snapper section and the lion's share of the prizes.

Second place went to Dave Gould with an 8.7kg fish and third went to Rob Pattison with his 6.26kg "off the rocks" snapper.

Rounding out the snapper section taking away fourth place honours was Paula Ward.

Junior section winner was Zac Dixon who weighed in a snapper at 1.6kg.

Adam Goodall scored the prize of the tournament when his name out of the bucket for the boat and outboard.
