The number of people on the dole in Northland is following positive national trends.

At the end of February there were 3759 working aged-people (18 to 64) receiving the unemployment benefit, down from 3779 a month earlier.

Nationally the number of people on the unemployment benefit dropped by 4224 during the last month.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says this is the single biggest drop in the unemployment benefit since the recession began.

At the end of February, 212 young people in Northland had been put into work through the Job Ops scheme and 3636 nationally.

Also Community Max has helped 343 young people into jobs in Northland, and 2927 nationally.
