A fishing trip off Ruakaka has brought new meaning to the expression 'bringing home the bacon'.

After hooking a respectable feed, including a 28-pound kingfish, three fishermen were on their way back to the marina when they came across a 140kg black boar out for a swim.

They lassoed the feisty swimmer and pulled it on board before killing it.

Papua New Guinea news photographer, and Ruakaka resident Christina Kewa, who came across the unusual sight at the marina, says she didn't know pigs lived in the waters off New Zealand.

"That really was a double treat for them. A pig for a fisherman instead of a fish," she says.
