Scavenging for community benefit has resulted in a $10,000 donation to Whangarei SPCA.

Bream Bay resident Yvonne Judge has been voted Northland winner of the New Zealand Kiwi Battler Awards, which allowed her to donate $10,000 to a charity of her choice. And she chose the Whangarei SPCA.

The national award, run by Gareth and Jo Morgan of the Morgan Foundation, entitles each regional finalist to nominate a charity to which $10,000 is paid.

Yvonne herself received $1000.

She set up a second-hand shop called Scavengers to raise money for her community.

Over 12 years she and a team of volunteers have raised more than $200,000 selling second-hand goods and collecting resources to give to primary schools.
