The NZ Transport Agency is closing State Highway 1 (SH1) to all southbound traffic at Central Avenue in Whangarei this Saturday (February 16) for necessary maintenance work.

LATEST: The closure will start at 8am until 5pm. Traffic will be diverted down Central Avenue, and onto Maunu Road.

The closure is necessary to replace a watermain.

The NZTA advises drivers to allow more time for their travel to reach their destinations on time and safely.

Other works in the region

SH1/SH14 intersection to Mt Pleasant Road, Whangarei:  Underground drilling and minor excavation continuing within shoulders, footways and berms.  The NZTA is working with Northpower Fibre and Drill Tech to minimise any disruption, but drivers should be aware that lanes have been narrowed.

SH1, Moerewa:  Improvements to highway through the town continue.

SH1, Whangarei - Saturday 16 February:  Southbound lanes closed at Western Hill Drive/Central Avenue intersection to replace a watermain.  Southbound SH1 traffic diverted along Central Avenue and Maunu Road 

SH14 Maunu Rd Pedestrian Crossing, Whangarei - Sunday 17 February:  improvements being made to the approaches to the crossing
