All systems go on revamp for library and museum

Work has started on Papakura's new library and museum.
The third floor of the Accent Point building on Great South Rd has become a construction zone as the last parts of the escalator, shop fittings and non-structural interior walls are removed.
Contractors have put up wooden hoardings so there's a safe path from Great South Rd to the inside lifts but the rest of the floor, including the public toilets, is closed to the public.
Access to the level two carpark from the East St lifts and stairs is also closed.
But on the fourth floor it's business as usual. The library and museum will still open during normal hours and the public toilets are open on this level.
Access is through the carpark and Great South Rd.
Papakura mayor Calum Penrose says the fact work has started on the third floor is "great news" for Papakura.
"This project is going to give the people of Papakura something special in the town centre," he says.
"It will improve access to the library and museum and transform the building into a vibrant place to meet friends and catch up, a place where people can go to pick up some good reading, take a break from shopping and relax as well as a great learning environment for children."
Papakura District Council has taken care to ensure there are safe ways to get from East St and Great South Rd to the top floor during construction, he says.
"And although there are some challenges in the short term I am sure the end result will be well worthwhile."
The plans show how much the project will transform the third floor, he says.
