Pacific music finalists named

South Auckland music was well represented when the finalists for the S3 Pacific Music Awards were announced last week.

The Pacific Events Centre was full of swagger and style and the night included live performances from J Williams, Erakah, Smashproof, Monstah and Sweet n Irie.

Manukau reggae group Three Houses Down is nominated in three categories – Radio 531PI Best Pacific Group and S3 Best Pacific Music Album for their album Break Out.

And for their single Kanikapila the band has earned a place as finalist in the APRA Best Pacific Song category.

Southside trio Smashproof and hiphop heavyweight Savage are both nominated for two awards.

They're going head to head against each other in the Niu Fm Best Pacific Urban Artist category.

There will be another battle in the Radio 531PI Best Pacific Group as Smashproof competes against Three Houses Down.

Savage is also up for the New Zealand Music Commission Best Pacific Male Artist and he's a finalist in the S3 Best Pacific Music Album category for his album Savage Island.

The winner of this award will be presented with a Tui award and recognised at the New Zealand Music Awards in October.

The S3 Pacific Music Awards were first held in 2005 to acknowledge the success of Pacific artists in New Zealand.

They aim to celebrate and promote excellence in Pacific music and encourage young Pacific musicians to aspire to higher levels of achievement

Awards categories include Pacific group, gospel album, urban artist, female artist, male artist, pacific song and a Tui is being presented for the Pacific music album.

Winners in each category will be announced at another event at the Pacific Events Centre on May 29. Tickets go on sale May 1 from
