Crime figures in Papakura are improving after going through a rough patch, Counties Manukau South area commander Inspector Jim Searle says.
He told the Papakura Local Board the current picture of crime is "young, opportunistic offenders working on burglaries".
They usually happen in insecure places like sheds, open windows and valuables left in cars, "as opposed to the higher-end offending with organised criminals", he says.
Serious crime is still happening but but the police are having "reasonable success" and usually catching the offenders.
The last few weeks have seen fewer house burglaries and "we're hoping to maintain that downward pressure".
