Whales harrassed

Boaties are harassing the southern right whale and her calf seen off Omaha Beach during the weekend by getting too close, says Conservation Department spokeswoman Liz Maire.
Boats were seen last Sunday well within the regulation 200 metres with one craft so close it was nearly tipped over with the wash from the whale’s tail.
“Needing a close-up photo is no excuse – keep at least 200 metres away from a mother and calf,” says Ms Maire.
All marine mammals are fully protected and offences carry penalties of up to six months imprisonment or fines of up to $250,000.
You can report any harassment of marine mammals to DOC on 0800 DOCHOT, 0800-362-468.
