Rodney identity and environmental activist Joe Polaischer died suddenly on Thursday after a short illness, just before his 62nd birthday.
More than 250 people attended his funeral service at the Matakana Pony Club on Saturday.
Tributes to the cofounder of Rainbow Valley Farm in Matakana came from Rodney Mayor Penny Webster, Green Party MP Sue Bradford, and former Rodney mayor John Law.
"It is with a great sense of loss that the Rodney District Council mourns the passing of a man who worked tirelessly for the betterment of our communities," Mrs Webster says.
"Joe was instrumental in many environmental initiatives, including Sustainable Rodney.
"He was a determined educator, advocator, ambassador and supporter of our climate change and waste reduction campaigns, among others.
"His dedication to creating a better environment for everyone now and in the future, and his ability to tell stories and encourage change will be his lasting legacy.
"Our challenge will be to continue his inspirational work.
"Thank you Joe for making such a valuable contribution to Rodney – you will be deeply missed."
Family and friends recalled Mr Polaischer’s passion for the environment, his love for wife Trish Allen, and the peace he found in his last few weeks.
He was buried at the Matakana Cemetery.
