Marathon team running for youth
Signing up for the Auckland Marathon or the Lake Taupo 160km cycle isn’t usually something you decide to do overnight.
But Whangaparaoa resident Adam Harris, 29, rounded up eight others to join in a jiffy for a good cause.
The team is riding and running to fundraise for Whangaparaoa’s Coast Youth Community Trust.
"I’ve seen the work that CYC Trust is doing in our community and the young people’s lives it’s turned around," says Adam.
"That motivates me to want to do this for them.
"I talked to a few friends about the idea and they got excited.
"Charitable trusts do it tough. Our goal is to raise $30,000 as a team."
CYC Trust is an independent charity set up 2006 and now employs 11 staff, runs a list of programmes and holds several government contracts.
The trust holds the Ministry of Education truancy officer contract for the Hibiscus Coast, and the Ministry of Social Development contract for a Strengthening Families co-ordinator.
"We run adventure-based activities, camps, a youth worker programme called 24-7, a drop-in centre, and a street project at skate parks," says chief executive Joe Youssef.
"The most recent thing we are working on is emergency accommodation, a safe house environment for youth and families.
"We want to see a reversal in youth crime stats in the area, a reduction in the levels of suicide and low self-esteem.
"We would like to see an improvement in the number of young people in Rodney leaving school without any qualification, and we want to see a better connection between youth, families, schools and the community."
Rodney’s team of runners include Adam Harris, Matt Harris and Colin Thomson.
Cyclists for Lake Taupo are Jim and Helen Grayson, Clinton Sanford, Tony Versey, Paul Christian and Mike Walton.
"We are training together," says Adam.
"I’ve never done a marathon, but I’ve done a couple of halves. At the moment we are running 25km to 28km in training. We are getting there."
The 42km Auckland Marathon is on November 1, the 160km Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is on November 28.
