The new residential dwelling – up to 250 square metres category was won by Graham Sawell from Pyramidz Architecture Design for Pope House in Matakana.

Its two pavilions are boldly articulated in black and white, with warm, well-planned interiors that incorporate all living spaces on one level and connect well to the exterior, judges say.

They described the design as "a scheme of wonderful modesty and restraint, perfectly in tune with its rural setting".

"This is a satisfying and extremely cost-effective home for a retired couple."

Graham Sawell and Pyramidz Architecture Design were also finalists in the residential new single dwelling – over 250 square metres category for the Warkworth Munro House in Tawharanui.

Phil Shaw of ICR Consulting was a finalist in the sustainable design category for a property on Centreway Rd, Orewa.

Bryan Airey of Award Homes was a finalist in the roof design category for a property on Goldsflats Lane, Coatesville.

The Resene supreme award was won by Brendon Gordon for his Kinloch Golf Course design.
