Beached and Surf to School education programmes are heading to schools in the northern region, ready for summer.

Surf Life Saving Northern Region is teaching BeachEd at surf life saving clubs around the area, while Surf to School has already started delivering safety messages to schools.

“Our community education programmes are key to preventing drowning in the community,” says chief executive officer Steve Johns.

BeachEd involves lifeguards teaching students tips and tricks to stay out of trouble in the surf. Learning is applied to water activities at the end of the beach day.

Surf to School takes the surf safety lesson directly to the school.

Last year, the two programmes were delivered to more than 28,000 children across the northern region.

Primary and secondary students are invited to a dance party on Saturday  organised by Blue Light Disco and Waiwera Thermal Resort.

The event features music, dancing, spot prizes, a movie pool and a safe environment for youngsters to enjoy themselves.

There will also be a Wipe Out challenge in the large pool with great prizes.

“Our youths will be the adults of tomorrow and it is so important to ensure they grow up in a wholesome community-focused environment,” spokeswoman Wendy Snookes says.

“It is equally important that we send a clear message that they can have fun and be entertained without the temptation of drugs, party pills and alcohol.”

The party is from 6pm to 9pm. Tickets are $10 for presales or $15 door sales, and children under 14 must be supervised by an adult.

Kaukapakapa School’s inaugural fundraising golf tournament is on Wednesday November 25.

School support group chairwoman Sandy Marshall says a team of dedicated parents plus principal Tony Westrupp have been organising the event at the Helensville Golf Course on Peak Rd.

A maximum of 30 teams of four players will tee off in a shotgun start at 9.30am, with the final results based on the stableford scoring system.  The longest drive, closest shot to the pin and the best dressed team will be awarded some of the many prizes available.

A number of different playing packages are offered, but all include a minimum of a round of golf and free food and drinks.

There are also sponsorship packages, because this event will provide a great opportunity for advertising, networking and team building.

“We are expecting this will be a major fundraiser for Kaukapakapa School,” Ms Marshall says.

Individuals can also enter and will be put into a team of four for playing purposes.

About 50 Kaukapakapa School students had two days of outdoor activities at Peter Snell Youth Village.

They participated in abseiling, archery, initiative courses, bivouac building, a burma trail, frisbee, golf and rock pool studies.

Students described the lives of a wide variety of life forms, says spokeswoman Caroline Armstrong.

They learned safe practices in the outdoors, social skills and caring for the environment.

“The camp provides students with memories that will last a life time and allows us to see individual successes in sometimes surprising places,” says Caroline.
