People need to take care around dolphins.
Be kind to fins is the Conservation Department message to boaties and beach visitors this summer.
Dolphins live in communities in specific areas around the Hauraki Gulf. They often move up and down the coast depending on water temperature and food.
While they are more likely to be found close to shore from April to June, during summer they have to share their patch with boaties and other water users.
Boat noise can mask communication between the animals – predators are harder to detect, and mothers and calves get separated more easily.
