Hot cars attract thousands to Kumeu

BIG EVENT: The show brought nearly 50,000 to Kumeu.

Nearly 50,000 people visited the weekend's Monster Energy Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival at Kumeu.

Good weather saw visitors enjoy an aerial display and many spectacular cars.

Carpart sculptures of movie characters from the Aliens, Predator and Batman franchise were a big attraction, along with a model drag-strip, "funnycar" dragsters, and some unusual items like a V8-powered bar stool and motorised picnic table and couch.

The people's choice award went to Steve Levine with his A40 Austin, while Clyde and Cynthia Farquhar's school bus placed runner-up. It also won best commercial along with Mark Church's 1957 Chevrolet third.

Ross McLennan's 1966 XP Falcon hard-top won best Ford and best Chev went to Ian Rainbow's 1950 Chev.

The best hot rod was won by Ian Taylor for his 1932 Ford, the best Australian car went to Ahmad Ali with his 1960 Holden.

The top street machine was Sue and Gavin Vowell's 1955 Chev, and the best presented was Clive Bracy's 1938 Ford Tudor. Ross Taylor won the best performance with his 1957 Chev, best other went to Trevor Halstead with his Studebaker, and best vintage was won by Arnold Van Zon with his 1929 Packard.

Russell Donoghue's 1970 Plymouth Baracuda was the best muscle car.

Lucky ticket holder Bruce Watkin won a 1972 Chevelle station wagon.
