Heavy rain caused surface flooding in parts of Rodney this morning.

Motorists using a popular shortcut through Sunnyside Rd in Coatesville encountered floods at two spots - one where signposts indicate depth.

Many turned back and took the longer route, while some in mainly higher vehicles took the chance. At least one didn't quite make it - the truck's air filter underneath it filled with water.

One enterprising fellow marked on his legs the depth at which his vehicle could safely get through, then waded to the deepest point. He found the water level 2cm over the marks, and turned back.

Flood measuring poles indicated the depth around 50-60 centimetres.
