Three Northpower employees' hard work and leadership have won them titles at the annual ESITO Excellence Awards.

The awards celebrate the most outstanding trainees with Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation (ESITO) training agreements who currently work in the electricity supply and telecommunications industries.

Northpower Project Manager Mike Hughes took out 'AdvancedTrainee of the Year' and Aroha McLean was voted 'Networks Trainee of the Year'.

In just two years working for Northpower Aroha has bucked stereotypes, joining the company under an initiative designed to encourage more women into roles within the energy sector considered less-traditional for females. She's also helped to promote another female-driven project, Ultimit, formerly known as Women In Power.

Outstanding leader John Donald of Warkworth took the award for 'Top Foreman' in the National Line Mechanics competition.

Northpower's Warkworth team - John Donald, Dave Lelo, Neil Wardle and Tom Winterbottom and Coach Lyndon Connolly - was runner up in the Line Mechanics competition, and Brent Richards earned runner-up in the Cable Jointer competition.

Three other members of Northpower's team - Cam Miller, Pat Croul and Katherine Cosgrove - were finalists in various divisions, a pleasing achievement for the fast-growing Northland company, Northpower's general manager of business support Barbara Harrison said.

"This is good recognition for the commitment, drive, skill and potential of people who have dedicated themselves to ongoing study and upskilling," said Ms Harrison.
