Dog defies fiery death
A family dog was all that was saved after a fire destroyed a Waimauku home.
Two tankers, eight fire trucks and 25 firefighters were called to the Ararimu Valley Rd home on Friday about 1.30pm, but found the house engulfed in flames.
Kumeu, Helensville, Waitemata, Silverdale, Shelly Beach, Kaukapakapa and Auckland City fire brigades responded and worked hard to get the fire under control.
"The fire was roaring when we got there," Kumeu fire brigade chief fire officer Andrew Beattie says.
"We not only had to put the fire out, but also make sure LPG tanks that were on an external wall were cooled," he says.
Two water tankers were used and water taken from another minor dwelling on the property.
"The place was absolutely gutted," Mr Beattie says. "The firefighters did an excellent job, but there's nothing we could do to save the house. We did stop it from spreading to a nearby shed. And rescuing a dog is always a bonus."
The owners were out at the time.
The fire is not considered suspicious but the cause is not yet known.
