David Kidd will again test his farming knowledge and skills at the ANZ Young Farmer Contest northern regional final on February 9.
The beef breeding and finishing farm manager on a 550ha Shelly Beach farm near Helensville is up against other northern district finalists at the Barge Park Event Centre in Whangarei after winning his lower north district final at Kaiwaka in October.
The northern region is the first throughout the country to select its grand finalist for the ANZ Young Farmer Contest Grand Final 2013 in Auckland on May 16-18. Other lower north placegetters were Rachel Rogers of Auckland, and Dan Smith and Fred Cook from Kaipara.
"Once again we had a tremendous turnout at the district finals across the country, with increased numbers on last year," contest operations manager Hilary Phillips says.
The district final modules tested competitors' practical and theoretical knowledge and ranged from backing a heavy roller around a tight course to welding a "Kiwi" figure.
With the eight regional finalists confirmed from each region, the regional finals series starts with the northern event, and ends with the Tasman final on March 30.
A new crop of Young Farmers will battle it out in the TeenAg and AgriKidsNZ Competitions taking place alongside the regional finals.
