PLANE ENTHUSIASTS: Radio controlled planes interest brother and sister McKenzie and Caitlin Carter of Wainui, and Jim Hall of Red Beach.

There's no flying pig yet but just about every other creature seems to be airborne at the Hibiscus Coast Radio Flyers annual free model aircraft open day on March 23.

Dog from Footrot Flats, a chipmunk, a few witches and even a lawnmower will be buzzing around the Wainui Pony Club field at 880 Wainui Rd from 10am till 3pm.

Visitors can win a model aircraft from Hobby City, and vintage cars will be on display too.

If you think you may fancy flying model airplanes but don't really know how to get started or how to get involved, the open day is the perfect place to start, spokeswoman Sandra Grace says.

Members range from teenagers to the over 80s.

Plenty of free parking, a sausage sizzle and hot and cold drinks are available. Dogs - apart from flying ones - aren't allowed on the working farm.

"It's an awesome, low budget day out for families and is always very popular," Sandra says.

Visit, call Nigel on 09 420 3182 or Wayne on 09 426 8584 for more information.
