A birthday celebration took us out to Ponsonby Road last week and after much deliberation, Mekong Baby was decided on as the place to celebrate another year on this earth.
Formerly GPK, the restaurant has been re-imagined as a Southeast Asian eatery sporting a menu of small plates, large plates and salads, all designed with sharing in mind.
Feeling fairly hungry, we ended up settling on four dishes to share between two of us. From the small plates menu we picked the wok fried squid and lamb ribs. The squid was beautifully cooked and the accompanying sauce was flavoursome and punchy.
The ribs were incredibly tender with large slabs of perfectly cooked meat coming away from the bone. The spices added a pleasing heat and once again the accompanying sauce was a good foil for the rich meat.
Next up was a selection from the large plates- Pad See Ew, a braised beef and glass noodle dish. This dish was excellent. It had great depth of flavour and the meat was soft, rich and incredibly tasty.
We also ordered the smashed green papaya salad, which was another star dish. This refreshing salad came adorned with prawn floss and peanuts and made a nice accompaniment to the heavy dishes we were eating.
The menu was expansive with over 30 options on offer, and there were so many mouth-watering dishes that selecting just a few was difficult. I've heard that the both the prawns on the small plate menu and the goat curry from the larger plates are great as well.
The staff at Mekong Baby are friendly and helpful and almost unnervingly efficient. If we were to make one criticism of the evening it would be that our dishes arrived too quickly from the kitchen and at times the meal felt oddly rushed. In fairness to them, the place was packed and you can imagine it is in their best interests to get people fed and watered as quickly as possible.
But, with all that aside, four dishes down and we were full, happy and contented. It was a great meal full of flavour, expertly cooked ingredients and very well priced to boot.
In our humble opinion, you should try it!
