"THE BIG ONE": Kim and Andy Petri reeled in this 16 lb snapper

Thinking she'd snagged a shark, Onetangi resident Kim Petri snapped on the bait arm and reeled in what turned out to be the biggest snapper she had ever caught.

Out on the water off Onetangi Beach, Kim and husband Andy were in their flat bottomed punt enjoying the summer sun on Saturday.

Having run out of bait, Andy managed to catch a mackerel by its tail and put a square of it on Kim's line.

"We'd just hooked a baby shark so I thought I'd caught a bigger one," says Kim of the huge tug she felt as the fish snapped onto the bait.

With no gaff on board, Andy had to lift the 16lb, 80cm snapper on board with a small knife.

"I told Kim not to try and pull it on board and shoved the knife under its gills to get it over the side," says Andy.

Anyone hoping for a fillet or two is too late as the Petri family has already finished it off.

"It was a bit tough to cut into but tasted great," says Andy.
