Freshly polished tractors were returned to their sheds, hats and fancy clothes to their cupboards and horses to their stables after the Onetangi Beach Races became one of the casualties of the tsunami alert.
Although Sunday dawned as perfect beach race weather, organiser Jenness Reeve had no alternative but to postpone the event following instructions from the New Zealand Civil Defence.
The tsunami alert sprung from an 8.8 on the Richter scale volcanic eruption in Chile across the other side of the Pacific Ocean. With reports of several surges approaching the New Zealand coastline, Civil Defence issued warnings for people to keep away from the beaches and the water.
Chairman of the Onetangi Beach Races committee, Greg Davenport says, "While we are disappointed about the postponement it would have been foolhardy to ignore this advice. Our first responsibility is to the safety and wellbeing of our community and visitors."
The new date for the event is Sunday, 14 March.
