Palm Beach residents were delighted by the sight of a whale swimming through the shallows of the bay.
Seeming to enjoy the bright blue skies and sunshine, it hung around the bay for more than an hour last Tuesday before moving westward into Enclosure and Oneroa bays.
Residents and visitors on Palm Beach watched keenly for sights of the six-metre mammal as it broke the surface, cheering and clapping when they spotted a spout of moist air produced from the blowhole on the top of its head when it came to the surface.
Later, as the sun set, it could be seen exploring around the rocks at either end of Oneroa Beach before heading north out to deeper waters.
Locals were not able to say for sure what type of whale had visited. Whale expert Dr Ingrid Visser was unavailable for comment by press time.
