Hawkesby engagement

Radio and TV personalities Mike Hosking and Kate Hawkesby announced their engagement in New Zealand Woman's Weekly magazine at the weekend.

But any rumours of a Waiheke wedding are unfounded. According to Ms Hawkesby's mother Joyce, an island resident, there are no wedding plans as yet – the engagement was "big enough".

When Mr Hosking asked Kate's father John Hawkesby for permission to marry his daughter, the magazine reported Mr Hawkesby as saying he was hoping someone "a little taller" would ask for his daughter's hand in marriage.

Mrs Hawkesby says: "John only says things like that about people he really likes."

Mr Hosking whisked Ms Hawkesby away to Melbourne to ask the big question and dazzled her with a five carat diamond engagement ring, securing a "yes" answer.
