Community groups will be out in force to man the water stops at the annual Wharf2Wharf fun run and walk this Saturday.

Elaborately decorated stalls will be manned by volunteers dressed to the nines and handing out water and sponges to nearly 1000 runners and walkers taking part in the event which is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Participants can grab a drink at water stops run by the Tennis Club, Boating Club, Gym Club, Pony Club, the Historical Society, Palm Beach Progressive, Budgeting Services and Citizens Advice Bureau.

Among the runners will be well-known faces including local board member Jim Hannan and Auckland Council parks adviser Gary Wilton. And tipped to be out in front is previous winner Scott Winton who has recently returned from Canada. He says he is race fit and ready to win – again.

Organisers Waiheke Rotary say registrations have been accepted from international visitors and from as far away as Wellington and Palmerston North.

The Dolphins Netball teams will be at Onetangi and Matiatia to take care of the finishers, providing them with water, fruit and a place to rest. Hey Dads will help with marshalling and Dr Mike Karetai and local motorbike enthusiasts will be on patrol.

At the finish line, Andrea Cole will be among the sports massage therapists in the massage tent.

Online entries close at midnight tonight but paper entries will be accepted until Friday for the 25km and 13km races from Orapiu, and Saturday for the 12km and 7km events.

Entry forms are available at Fullers Matiatia and at BNZ bank in Oneroa or online at www.wharf2wharf.co.nz.
