Upgrades planned for sports fields
The state of the island's sports fields will be getting a boost with news Auckland Council is planning an upgrade in 18 months.
The good news was delivered to the Waiheke Local Board members by the council's parks adviser Gary Wilton at their latest meeting.
Mr Wilton says pitch three at the Onetangi Sports Park will have new drainage plus a sand carpet upgrade, to put it in line with the two other pitches at the well-used sports facility.
A sand carpet pitch will also be created at the sports field at the Ostend Domain, along with a lighting system which will allow the field to be used for training at night.
The news was greeted with surprise and gratitude by board members.
Chairwoman Faye Storer says when the facilities at the Ostend Domain was last raised with Auckland Council "it was well down the list" for improvements.
"I'm phenomenally grateful for this."
Mr Wilton says he thinks the reason why Waiheke was bumped up the list is because the rugby, league and soccer clubs "are now extremely well organised on the island and have lobbied well".
Board member Paul Walden says: "It's exciting stuff to see sand carpet and lights for the Ostend Domain."
