Quirky works to savour
A quirky collection of works by Waiheke poets is being recommended to while away lazy days this summer.
Slow Down You're Here, released in spring this year, features poems from the Waiheke Writers' Group.
It is dedicated to the late Millicent McIvor, whose work is also included in the book.
Writers' group member Angi Cuddihy is one of the eight contributing poets and says the collection is a great summer read.
"There's a poem about a bach that fell down the cliff at Onetangi and one about the mystery benches that keep popping up all over the place."
It's also a bit political, she says.
"The poem Seed Savers is an ‘up-yours' to Monsanto and there are a few protest poems. But there are also some ‘love of Waiheke' poems."
Angi wrote five of the poems but one of her favourites is by Millicent McIvor.
"It's about her septic tank and the fact she sees a mushroom in it but realises it's a hat she lost."
Slow Down You're Here retails for under $10 at Take Note, Tivoli and the Waiheke Community Art Gallery.
Multiple orders are available by phoning Mary Batten on 372 6831 or Angi Cuddihy on 372 7338.
The Waiheke Writers' Group meets on Thursday mornings at the Catherine Mitchell Centre in Ostend. Phone Kath O'Sullivan on 372 5546 for details.
