A new idea is being floated as an alternative to the Matiatia marina proposal.
Architect Geoff Waters has come up with a concept for a marina at Kennedy Pt which has room for a secondary ferry passenger service.
Mr Waters presented his ideas to the Waiheke Local Board at its first meeting of the year on January 30.
He says the design would include parking and port terminus facilities, a timber breakwater, and more car parking on council land behind the existing car park.
There would be 169 berths, and two berths for a small passenger ferry operation.
"It would bring the focus away from Matiatia. We could even get a competitive ferry service and stop pushing up prices. It would create a stronger infrastructure and a stronger community - environmentally as well as financially," he said.
