Award for The Shed
A tight-knit team at a small Waiheke Island vineyard restaurant has come up trumps at the Metro Restaurant of the Year Awards.
The Shed at Te Motu Vineyard was announced Best Rural Restaurant in Auckland at a dinner at Shed 10, Queen's Wharf, on Monday.
The restaurant re-launched at the end of October with a new menu, new energy and new owners after a buyout by a local consortium including original owners the Dunleavy family.
Operations manager Mark Gitmans says a great part of the success has come from the installation of a vegetable garden by Mike Dunleavy, in conjunction with head chef Bronwen Laight.
"We wanted to serve reality on the table in both wine and food. That meant keeping the prices real, and keeping the food honest."
Gitmans, Laight, sous chef Jesse Ross and maitre d' Simon Pope were all there to receive the award.
Laight says another key ingredient has helped.
"I think it's the love that goes into the food that allows us to be such a fun kitchen and a great small team.
"We are a really tight group and we all share the same goals. We're all willing to jump in wherever help is needed."
