Go-getter Dennis Galvin, 78, is looking for help to revamp a recreation room at the Te Atatu South RSA Village.

The former sports administrator chairs the residents’ committee and is after a bit of gear to equip the facility once alterations begin next week.

"We are looking for a lounge suite or easy chairs, tables and a dresser," he says.

"To get a coffee maker or even a dehumidifier would be wonderful."

The room was once home to unsafe, old gym equipment.

Mr Galvin investigated with Occupational Safety and Health staff who said it was dangerous to use – especially without supervision.

"Our residents range in age from their 70s to their 90s," he says.

"The equipment was getting old and falling apart – it just wasn’t safe for the residents."

Mr Galvin has since made plans to turn the room into a lounge and library area for residents’ relatives and friends.

Some of the work will be funded with proceeds from weekly bingo and raffles and Mr Galvin has been spending most days cleaning and organising the area.

The village was built in 1986 and includes 33 residential units.

The new lounge will be open seven days a week and every member will have a key.

Call Mr Galvin on 835-0993 or email him at dennisgalvin@gmail.com for more information.
