A retaining wall in the carpark of Henderson's historic Mill Cottage has been given a new lease of life with the completion of a $4000 mural celebrating the area's timber milling past.
The work was funded through money from the 2008-09 Waitakere City Council Heritage Fund.
The West Auckland Historical Society applied for the grant and was thrilled to receive it.
Chairman Trevor Pollard says members have wanted to spruce up the wall for years.
"It's such a large space which was very uninteresting to look at.
"The reaction has been really positive.
"A lot of people have stopped for a look and come up to us to say how wonderful it is and want to find out more about the history behind it - that's the reaction we want."
Councillor Judy Lawley says murals are a great way to remember the city's heritage and preserve it for future generations.
"The heritage fund is all about helping local organisations like this to care for the city's heritage."
Applications for the 2009-10 Heritage Fund close on December 18.
The council has $54,000 to share among successful applicants.
The fund is designed to help owners of heritage buildings, archaeological sites, museums, heritage trees and marae care for the city's heritage.
It can be used for education programmes, assistance with physical works, refunds on building consent fees or specialist advice on the care of artefacts and artworks.
