A 17-year-old and his 58-year-old grandmother had to be cut out of their vehicle after it struck a power pole on West Coast Rd.
Both were rushed to hospital with serious injuries on January 29 after the 3.30pm smash in Glen Eden.
No other cars were involved.
Henderson strategic traffic unit acting sergeant Carlo De Martin says a nine-year-old girl and her 10-year-old sister were passengers in the back seat.
"One has a broken arm and both have seat belt burns to their collarbones," Mr De Martin says. "Both were kept in Starship Hospital overnight and released the next day."
He says the teenage driver broke an ankle in the accident.
"The grandmother suffered internal injuries possibly caused from the safety belt," he says.
"The Fire Service had to cut the doors off both the driver and passenger sides to free
them."
The pair were in Auckland Hospital for about five days before being released.
The road was blocked off for an hour and 15 minutes.
The serious crash unit is investigating.
