A primary school teacher and a polytechnic lecturer have teamed up to tackle the weeds in the Waitakeres.

Manukau Institute of Technology's Sandy McGivern and Titirangi Primary's Don Morrison have organised Dances with Weeds, an event aimed at clearing ginger weed around Don's school.

Pulling the day together has been made easier for Don thanks to a Royal Society of New Zealand fellowship.

The fellowship pays his teacher's salary for a year so he can focus on galvanising the community around weed eradication.

"When I'm finished I'll be able to take the knowledge and enthusiasm I've gained back to my students," he says.

Sandy has also been wanting to find a way to make a difference in the area.

"As part of the Landmark Education course I'm doing I had to come up with a project and I wanted to do something which would benefit the community," she says.

"We need to help people see what's possible and show them how easy it is to make this a better place."

Dances with Weeds runs from 10am to 2pm, March 21, on the lower playing field of Titirangi Primary School. There will be live music and a barbecue. Bring old clothes and a spade.
