At least 30 Clark St properties will be bought by Waitakere City Council under the Public Works Act as part of a redevelopment of the New Lynn town centre.
The council has budgeted $11 million to buy the affected sites.
Spokeswoman Fiona Cunningham says the long-term plan is to link Clark St with Great North Rd.
"To achieve this we need certain key properties along Clark St and the proposed extension route," she says. "We've advised the relevant property owners and tenants very early on of our plans and have been very thorough in our discussions and negotiations."
Ms Cunningham says most people are willing to sell. The council hopes to finalise the deals in the next couple of months.
Waitakere is also looking to buy other properties in Rankin Ave and Totara Ave under the Public Works Act. But the number of sites and the total cost of the purchases remains confidential.
New Lynn Kindergarten, at 1 Totara Ave, is one of the affected properties.
Auckland Kindergarten Association general manager Tania Harvey says the city has offered to pay for the organisation to shift.
