BRAINIAC: Hasan Daniyal puts far more hours into studying than your average school student and it pays off.

FEW teenagers would put as much effort into their school work as Hasan Daniyal.

The New Lynn resident slept for as little as four hours a night while studying for his O levels in Pakistan.

And it paid off.

Daniyal got seven out of eight As in his exams, including two A stars which are like A-pluses in the British education system.

O levels are part of the General Certificate of Education, a Cambridge University examination, and are equivalent to NCEA level 1.

Daniyal is now studying NCEA level 2.

The 17-year-old has been in New Zealand for two months and attends Mt Roskill Grammar.

He will return to his home city of Islamabad at the end of the month to receive an award for his success.

He studied before and after school in preparation for the exams to achieve his outstanding results. He says the hard work has been justified.

He is also pleased because he beat his older brother who only got six As.

Cousin Mahvash says she always knew Daniyal would excel.

"But at the same time I never expected him to do this well," she says.

Daniyal is aiming to achieve excellence in his NCEA exams. "I'm just getting used to the school system over here. It's very different to school in Pakistan. It's not as competitive."

Daniyal wants to study engineering or medicine when he finishes school.

His long-term goal is to be a structural engineer in Dubai.
