Cleanliness, food handling issues and a "cockroach infestation" are among the reasons three west Auckland eateries have E grades.

Ranui Chinese European Takeaway, Golden Sun Takeaways in Avondale and Hollywood Bakery on Lincoln Rd were all slapped with the E grade last month by Auckland Council for not meeting required pest and food handling standards.

Mervyn Chetty, environmental health manager at Auckland Council said of the Ranui takeaway shop: "It was given an E grade due to cleanliness and pest issues (a cockroach infestation). It closed immediately, cleaned up, had pest control through, and then reopened the next day."

Chetty said typically, for a premises to be issued an E grade, there will be a combination of pest, cleanliness and food handling issues.

Hollywood Bakery in Henderson had a similar issue as the Ranui takeaways, with a cockroach infestation forcing them to shut their doors for two days in late March.

The bakery had its E grade issued on March 23.

The Henderson Hollywood Bakery manager said his premises had to be closed for two days while cockroaches were cleared.

The Henderson Hollywood Bakery manager said his premises had to be closed for two days while cockroaches were cleared.

The manager said his premises had been "closed for about a month beforehand", in which time he said the pests moved in.

"We close up for holiday and when we get back we have a few cockroaches," he said.

"We did a pest control and they got rid of the cockroaches."

The owners were first alerted to the problem by a passing customer who spotted the bugs from outside the bakery.

"When it was cleared we called him in the morning and told him," the manager said.

Chetty said E grade premises closed immediately and are usually shut down for 24-to-72 hours.

The majority of eateries in west Auckland have either an A or B grade.
