World Masters Games hits the west
The largest contingent of athletes and supporters to ever hit New Zealand for a sporting event will touch down this week for the World Masters Games (WMG2017).
Of the 48 competition venues set to host the 28 different sports events, five are in the wider west Auckland area and all are free for the public to attend.
Henderson's The Trusts Arena, West Wave Aquatic Centre, the Waitemata Clay Target Club, Massey Archery Club and Woodhill Forest will host a variety of events over the course of the 10 day festival.
28,000 registered athletes, supporters and officials from more than 100 countries will be in action.
WMG2017 chief executive Jennah Wootten said the event has been four years of planning with the aim of delivering the best World Masters Games in history.
Tonight's opening ceremony at Eden Park will feature the traditional parade of athletes as well as the largest laser light show ever seen in New Zealand, unique cultural elements and "a few surprises".
