Lydia Ko's Australian amateur golf championship defence steamrolls on, after a dominant win in the first round of matchplay.

The Auckland 15-year-old, and world number one women's amateur, demolished home hope, New South Wales' Jessica Dengate 6&5 today at the Commonwealth Golf Club in Melbourne and is back in action tomorrow as the final 16 players vie for a place in the quarterfinals.

Ko will face another player from New South Wales in Elizabeth Elmassian after she also had a convincing victory over Jo Charlton, claiming the match 5&4.

Tomorrow will be Ko's fourth day of competition after two previous qualifying rounds - and if she reaches the final on Sunday, will have gone through a considerable mental test, playing a solid week of competitive golf without rest.

Ko completed the qualifying with a share of the medallist honours.

Elsewhere, fellow New Zealander Julianne Alvarez has also made it through to the last 16 after a 3&2 win over Carly Beck (NSW).

Alvarez faces Japan's Asuka Kashiwabara tomorrow after she blitzed Australian Lauren Sinclair 6&4.
