Kiwi tennis No 1 Marina Erakovic has recorded her best win of the new year by thrashing world No 27 Su-Wei Hsie in the first round of the US$235,000 WTA event in Pattaya, Thailand.

Erakovic hammered the third seed from Taiwan 6-2 6-2, shrugging off some of the disappointment caused by her first round exit to Alize Cornet at the Australian Open.

The Aucklander is using the tournament to prepare for the upcoming Fed Cup in Kazakhstan and said it was a good win, especially against a player who she hadn't faced for a long time.

"I felt like both of us started a little nervous because it was a first round," said Erakovic, who has dropped to 75th in the world.

"But, you know, I really tried to play aggressive and get used to the conditions and the court, and I think I did really well today, so I'm happy with myself.

"I played Su-Wei a long, long time ago at an ITF tournament in California so I really didn't know what to expect.

"I know she's a very tricky player and has some great shots, so I knew that I had to be really alert out there."

Erakovic will play Thai wildcard Varatchaya Wongteanchai in the second round.

The Kiwi will also team with Britain's Heather Watson in the doubles. They are the second seeds.
