Aucklanders can share a coffee and a chance at gold with one of our greatest Olympic Games medal hopes today.

Defending champion Valerie Adams will throw for gold in central Auckland this morning, albeit on a huge screen at an Olympic Games fan zone.

The Atrium on Takutai Square has Olympic coverage beamed across seven separate screens.

Fans will no doubt be on the edge of their seats, but if they need any help staying alert free coffee will be available.

The finals action begins at 6.15am and should go for about 90 minutes.

A major slip-up by New Zealand Olympic officials almost cost Adams' her chance to defend her title.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee forgot to register her and only yesterday was granted an emergency amendment by the International Olympic Committee and the International Association of Athletics Federations.

More than 1000 spectators have attended the zone each day.
