It was made famous by The Muttonbirds, and now Auckland Theatre Company is looking to locals to tell the real tales of Dominion Rd.

Dominion Road Stories is a theatrical experience for 2013 being developed by Auckland Theatre Company's community programme, ATC Participate.

Locations and sites along the 6km, ethnically diverse stretch will be animated through a series of theatrical journeys and installations, performed by a mix of volunteers and professional actors.

ATC is looking for the memories, anecdotes, photos and images from people who have lived, worked or visited the iconic road.

"We are interested in personal stories and we are looking for the good, the bad and the ugly," says ATC's Laura Jones.

ATC is working with digital media students from AUT to record stories and with Auckland Libraries and the Albert-Eden Local Board to capture some of the stories through oral history interviews.

"Oral history recordings of peoples' recollections, memories and experiences - including stories of the ordinary and extraordinary - help us to understand social history not captured in written records. Oral history recording is a great way to honour the diversity of community stories," says Sue Berman, President of the National Oral History Association of New Zealand.
