Big Boys Toys has brought flying men, fighter jets, BMX stars, million dollar super cars and the latest gaming technology to ASB Showgrounds for one giant lad's day out this weekend.

The three-day event is expected to attract even bigger crowds this year, than the 25,000 people who attended in 2011 which was the event's first year back after a three-year hiatus.

Organiser Dean Wilson said the biggest thing learnt from last years return was that size really does matter.

"What people really wanted was scale. They want the whole showground packed full of entertainment and exhibits."

One of the many big draw cards this year is the Flyboard-X. Compared to a pair of water jet powered boots, the contraption lets the driver fly high in the air, as well as underwater.

Organisers have built a specially commissioned, 2m deep pool for the showcase, which is the first time the board will be demonstrated in New Zealand.

"It's been a worldwide sporting sensation...and you've got to see this thing in action.  But we couldn't find a pool big enough to put into the arena, so we decided to dig. With the dirt, we've built a mini-motor cross track," said Wilson.

But it is not the only first for the event. Fighter jets, including a Mig21 and Polish Iskra will be on display, alongside the world's first jet fighter simulators.

The jets are on loan from the private collection of Auckland businessman Manfred Bennett, who first started collecting when he saw the Mig21 for sale on Trade Me in 2010.

Of course machines on four, and two, wheels are a big part of Big Boys Toys. This year, Kiwi action-sport sensation Jed Milton will take part in the BMX Big Air showcase, complete with a specially constructed mega-ramp.

And the Action Arena will host some of the country's best freestyle motor cross drivers.

For those who are not chasing an adrenaline rush, there will be a collection of the finest performance cars around including a Lamborghini Gallardo Super Leggera, which will be used to break the New Zealand land speed record later this year.

Big Boys Toys also judges the National Excavator Champs, with the best digger operators in Auckland showing off their skills and the CrossFit Auckland Games, where super fit competitors can win a share of a $10,000 prize pool.
