SOLA ENERGY: Sola Rosa will play in Music in Parks.

This summer Aucklanders can enjoy the sun and the sounds of some of New Zealand's best musicians in parks across the city.

Music in Parks, in its 20th year, runs from January through March, with 42 free al fresco gigs from over 60 artists traversing opera, soul, swing, hip hop and jazz.

The programme features established acts including I Am Giant, Adeaze, Avalanche City, Midge Marsden, Sola Rosa, Tahuna Breaks and New Zealand Opera.

It will also showcase up and coming artists such as ukulele super group The Nukes, and rappers Mixt Frequencies, who are just 12 and 13 years old.

The Music in Parks schedule has been expanded for next year and for the first time local boards from Devonport, Hibiscus Coast, Kaipatiki, Mangere/Otahuhu, Otara, Upper Harbour and Waitakere will host events.

Each board will be able to tailor the programme to local needs and decide on times, locations and performers.

The Auckland Domain will host six shows, including a jazz concert in the band rotunda.

Manurewa's Nathan Homestead will also see a couple of shows during the festival, and country fans can head to Blockhouse Bay's beach reserve.

St Heliers will retain its opera concert at the Dingle Dell venue, pencilled in for February 2.

The series was an opportunity to celebrate the city's artists and its local green spaces, Mayor Len Brown said.

"There's such a wealth of musical talent in Auckland. Showcasing these artists in some of the most beautiful parks in the region is the best way to celebrate summer in our vibrant city."
