Auckland's Laneway Festival will be bigger than ever this year, with the addition of a new stage.

Dubbed the Red Bull Thunderdome, the performance area will be set inside one of the silos at Wynyard Quarter and feature a line-up of local and international DJs including A Place to Bury Strangers DJs, Stinky Jim and Phelps and Munro.

Laneway Festival co-promoter Mark Kneebone describes the area as a "3am party right in the middle of the festival".

The Thunderdome will be enclosed by black-out drapes with air conditioning and lights, with enough room for 120 people.

The new stage marks an expansion of the Auckland Anniversary Day festival; the silo being used was outside Laneway's parameter in 2012, but this year organisers have extended to include the silo and the grassy knoll next to it, which will mean more room and shade for music-lovers.

The line-up for Laneway Festival features more than 20 acts including international stars Bat for Lashes and Mercury Prize winners Alt J, plus local legends Phoenix Foundation and Lawrence Arabia.
