Fresh from tours with Slash and Shihad, London-based rockers I Am Giant are back home on Auckland soil to headline today's free Music in Parks gig at the Three Kings Reserve.

The band was formed in 2009 by Aucklanders Paul Matthews and Shelton Woolright and this year completed tours of New Zealand, Australia, Europe and Asia promoting their debut album The Horrifying Truth.

But supporting former Guns ‘n' Roses guitarist Slash and his band The Conspirators as part of the Australian leg of their world tour was the real highlight, Mr Matthews says.

"Touring with such a massive icon was pretty epic.

"We got to hang out with him to a certain level and chat with him and he complimented the band and attempted to play one of our songs on guitar and that was pretty cool."

Although based in London and fronted by British singer Ed Martin, I Am Giant are still considered to be a homegrown band and are looking forward to stepping back on an Auckland stage.

"There's always a lot of familiar faces in the crowd and that's really great.

"It's always really supportive because we're the hometown boys," Mr Matthews says.

The four-piece will be supported by local bands Fire at Will, Ekko Park and 71 Sunset.

The Music in Parks audience will be the first to hear the band's new track performed live in New Zealand.

While in Auckland they will continue writing material for their second album. As the band are heading back to the northern hemisphere in March to concentrate on touring and recording in Europe, drummer Shelton Woolright says this could be one of their last New Zealand gigs for a fair while.

The boys have no plans to take a break from their full-on schedule any time in the near future.

"In fact we're going to speed up actually," frontman Ed Martin says.

I Am Giant will perform today at Music in Parks, Three Kings Reserve which runs from 2pm to 6pm.
