Lady Gaga has shown support for a grieving friend in her own very special way.

The superstar tweeted a picture of her freshly shaved head to 29 million Twitter followers as a tribute to her friend Terry Richardson whose mother died on Tuesday.

The star photographer is mourning his mum, Annie Lomax, whose last weeks he captured in moving photos.

Richardson is famous for raunchy potraits of the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Kate Moss - and was the mastermind behind Gaga's Monster Ball tour photo book, Lady Gaga X Terry Richardson.

Gaga took to Twiiter to share the sad news and posted a picture of her radical new hairstyle.

In the photo, Gaga appears to have cut off her long hair and shaved the back of her head, and writes on the site her new look is a tribute to Richardson's mum.

"I did it for u (sic) Terry. I'm sorry about ure (your) mummy. She has Princess Die (late British royal, Diana, Princess of Wales), but were (we are) all princess high."

But she put fans who feared a too radical change at ease "But we still have glamour in the front. ARTPOP".
