Tom Hooper's Les Miserables opens in New Zealand on January 10 and Quentin Tarantino Django Unchained opens here on January 24. But in the US they both open on Christmas Day, which makes them direct competitors.

There was only one way for Les Mis' Anne Hathaway and Django Unchained's Samuel L. Jackson to settle it: by having a sad off (THIS CONTAINS COARSE LANGUAGE).

Which movie is more heart-wrenching? Both actors put forward very strong cases, using very strong language, because: Nothing says Christmas like slaves and whores.
